The 2021 IIHF World Championship will be held in Latvia. Initially, Belarus and Latvia were supposed to host the world championship, but due to the unstable political situation in Belarus, it was decided to deprive it of the World Championship. At the same time, the Belarusian national team will participate in the 2021 World Cup.
The Russian national team got into Group A, where its opponents will be the national teams of Sweden, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, Great Britain and Belarus. Their matches will take place on May 21 (against the Czech Republic), May 22 (against Great Britain), May 24 (against Slovakia), May 26 (against Denmark), May 29 (against Switzerland), May 31 (against Sweden) and June 1 (against Belarus).
The last Ice Hockey World Championship was held in 2019, the winner was the Finnish national team, which was stronger than Canadian national team.
The last time the Russian national team won the IIHF World Championship was in 2014. Then the Finnish national team was beaten in the final.
