In the 1/16 finals at the Kremlin Cup, US representative Tommy Paul will play against Mikael Imer from Sweden.
The 24-year-old representative of the USA after a good performance at the tournament in Indian Well, where he managed to beat Andrei Rublev in the 1/16 finals – 6:4; 3:6; 7:5. Perhaps Tommy would have gone through to a later stage at the home tournament, but in the 1/8 finals he was stopped by Cameron Norrie from Great Britain, who eventually won the tournament. Paul lost the match with Norrie in three sets – 4:6; 6:4; 2:6.
The 23-year-old Swede played extremely poorly on Hard in September. At the tournament in Metz, he managed to beat only Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany at the stage of the 1/16 finals - 7:5; 6:3. And already in the 1/8 finals was followed by a defeat from Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta - 5:7; 2:6. At the very end of September, Imer arrived at the tournament in Sofia, but in Bulgaria Mikael already lost in the 1/16 finals to John Millman from Australia - 2:6; 4:6.
Tommy Paul and Mikael Imer met each other only once, it was in 2017. In mid-November , the U.S. representative was stronger in three sets at the Champaign tournament – 6:4; 3:6; 7:6 (7:0).
Mikael Imer was unlucky with the grid in Moscow, now Tommy Paul is in much better shape, and therefore the US representative should go further.
